Our Temp Home Living Experience

The time has to come to write all about our experience of temp home living. We move out of our Airbnb today and really couldn’t be any more excited to move onto the next chapter of this book. The genre of this story is a bit adventure, a bit drama, some thriller, (because I’m scary mom sometimes) and a lot of family.  I assume the lessons I learned from the past two months are still going to come to me as we move into our new home; but for now, here’s what I’ve come up with.

Thank goodness for the healthy relationship Curtis and I share. While he has had the giant undertaking of a new position with different people, different responsibilities, different location, etc., I wanted to step up. During this time of giant transitions, I felt I needed to hold the reigns of driving our family through the uneasy home life terrain for weeks to come.  When we first moved into our initial Airbnb I tasked myself with being the best support I could while at home. Meaning, I would take on getting the kids settled at their new school, grocery shopping, homework, meal planning, cooking, house chores, packing/unpacking, and being the stable emotional support that everyone needed. I quickly realized that these expectations I put on myself weren’t realistic. If I was the rock for everyone else, who was mine? Initially I took to writing out my feelings in a notebook because I didn’t want to weigh down anyone with my thoughts. Those pages became my rock for a couple weeks. But we all know that paper covers rock and eventually I was defeated. When I gave way to my feelings and expressed myself to Curtis he was completely understanding and ended up commiserating along with me about our stresses and uncharted feelings. We were able to move past the facade that everything was fine and be real. I know that may sound funny because it’s not so much that we were trying to trick one another, we were trying to fool ourselves. Truly, we feel very blessed by this whole situation – but that doesn't prevent the weight of the experience from impacting us.

We have stayed at countless Airbnb’s in our past and have almost always had a great experience. Because of the late notice we received about move time, the availability of vacation rentals was not in abundance, especially for weeks at a time.  And because of that, these two homes that we stayed in during our longest Airbnb stays yet, were also the worst homes we’ve visited. May it be due to lack of supplies, beds, comfort, or style – this so-called purgatory felt like a ticking time bomb.

Wow, I sound dramatic.

Another job I put on myself was to stay busy with work and part of that meant keeping up with my social media and sharing this experience on my different platforms. I felt like giving others a look into our less-than-ideal living situation and how I worked through it could be helpful to someone. It was fun to stay busy and challenge myself to see the easy fixes in our temp home. I shared some of these tips on my Instagram.

  1. Swapping out the stock pillows on your sofa with pretty and personalized.

  2. Creating art that can cover an existing canvas without ruining the frame.

  3. A little cutting board DIY and adding style to an otherwise un-styled kitchen.

  4. Using linens to fix unsightly furniture.

  5. Rearranging wall art to better suit the room.

I think I deserve a pat on the back for the little amount of home shopping I did on this two-month hiatus. It’s easy to feel uninspired by a home that doesn’t feel like you. This leads to less motivation and home care quickly can become stagnant. At least this is how the process went for me. I felt especially hit by this as part of my job is to share home décor and the way I use it in my daily life.

Before we moved, I set aside things that I wanted to bring to our temp living to make them feel a bit more like home. Items that aren’t just the necessities. I wanted to pack our own pillows because eight weeks without your own bed is long enough! I also packed our coffee pot, Ninja blender, favorite water bottles and protein shakers, my stationary bike, my bedside fan, a decorative and useful bowl, throw blankets, pretty throw pillows, a few baskets for kid’s toys, and a vase for some local foraging. Something Curtis and I both agree on is that the trees and greenery around here are gorgeous. Something we didn’t agree on was what to put in our short-term living boxes. While I shoved all the home décor inside (now I think he agrees I was right) I also packed all my clothes. That was not the right decision. I mean I don’t want to take all the credit for this poor decision because I felt pressed for time. The packers showed up at our old house while I was still in the shower and told me that I had all day to figure out the closet. A few hours later they told me to get it done “now.” So maybe bringing all my winter clothes to 100+ degree weather wasn’t considered light packing, but I’ve never been one to pack light anyway. Lesson learned.

Ok so what did I really learn from this whole saga? I learned that we have a pretty high threshold for stress. We really can get by with a lot less than what we are used to. Having our own home is a luxury that we have come to take for granted. I value my personal space, but I value my family time even more. This time together where we only have one another to rely on was actually a gift. We had been given the advice years ago that the best thing to do for a newly married couple was to move away from everything and everyone. The idea is that this forces your relationship to an instantaneous bond that can otherwise take many years to build. That only having each other to rely on, to feel safe by and nurture; nurtures your relationship much more quickly. It only took us 10 years, but we made that move! I won’t speak for Curtis…who am I kidding, I always do. We both feel closer by this experience with each other and with our children. We have a stronger appreciation for everyone in this household and the intricacies that make our crew as unique as it is.

I really must thank you guys too for hanging in with us during this time.  To know that we have had many hearts cheering us on while we made this scary leap has honestly kept me going. Some days keeping the routine of checking in on stories truly kept my sanity. Part of me feels funny admitting that these “strangers” on the internet help in motivating my work and day to day life. The other part of me is ready to kick butt and take names. Like; Painter’s White, Campfire Ash, Polar Bear, Cotton Sheets, Honied White…

Those white paint projects are coming up first.

Xoxo,

Meegan

My Temp Housing Target Haul

A few items I picked up to make our temp housing feel more like home!

Fall Decor Under $15

Since I couldn’t pack all of my favorite fall decor, these finds under $15 were a perfect substitute that could warm up a space without breaking the bank!

Powder Room Transformation

Our powder room has seen a few refreshes and updates over the years, but during the last few weeks it got its biggest transformation yet! In anticipation of Jack’s graduation party (and now a big move!) I knew I wanted to get this bathroom buttoned up and looking good for guests. Powder rooms are such a great opportunity to really think outside the box design-wise and step outside your style wheelhouse. They’re small enough that wall treatments, paint, and decor aren’t going to completely break the bank (especially if later on you decide you want to go a different direction) so you might as well live it up and have fun!

One of the best tips I have for transforming flexible spaces like a powder room that can get changed constantly, is temporary wallpaper. I was turned off of the idea of permanent, pain-in-the-butt to remove wallpaper, but then I discovered Tempaper and all of my wallpaper worries melted away. They make high quality peel and stick wallpaper in endless colors and patterns, that is totally renter and DIY friendly. If you’re someone like me that likes to change things up consistently or maybe has commitment issues with big design decisions, this stuff is for you. You just peel it off, stick it right up on the wall, and remove it whenever your heart desires!

I ended up deciding on Bohemia in Saffron Sun to really brighten up our powder room. I love that its neutral enough to coordinate with the rest of the house but also gives a little pop of color and playful pattern to surprise guests when they open the door. It has the appearance of being watercolored straight onto the walls which is typical of more expensive traditional wallpapers. It gives it a very fluid, dreamy look. I would suggest overestimating the amount you may need so you can really play around with matching up the pattern and how it covers the wall!

As I was installing the wallpaper, I could tell the plank ceiling was going to give me a hard time getting a seamless look at the top. I ended up adding crown moulding to hide any imperfections or gaps and painted it to match the board and batten below. If you have any kind of wall or ceiling treatments that may interfere with your wallpaper plans, I suggest adding some type of trim or molding to conceal any overlap. I’m really happy with how it turned out!

Next I came home with a few Behr paint swatches to find a coordinating color for the board and batten. I wanted to repeat a color from the Tempaper design but also find something that would play nicely with the ceiling (which is just stripped plywood stained with Early American). I decided on Rodeo Tan by Behr.

Brass just felt like the right move for an accent, so I swapped out the cabinet hardware for these brushed brass pulls from Amazon - less than $2 a piece! I also installed a new antique brass faucet for just over $50 that is way too cute for its own good. Amazon really pulled through for this powder room…I even added a fancy leather tissue box cover just to make those daily essentials a little less unsightly. The vintage paintings help tie in my love for antiques and thrifted treasures, and are an easy way to elevate a space on a budget.

I also decided a new vanity light in here was a must. I picked out this one from Maxim Lighting for its simplicity and little bit of a modern edge. The tubular lights are fun, powder rooms are fun, so why the heck not? The black finish helps balance out all the brass in the room and coordinates with the dark vanity. It gives off great light and helps brighten the space which is everything I wanted!

Overall I am so happy with how this little powder room transformation turned out. The temporary wallpaper was a huge win and made all of the other decisions and details fall into place. Now its ready for ALL the guests - and a new homeowner!

January's Bedroom

It’s been a minute since I started this bedroom refresh. If you’ve done any sort of home project during the pandemic, you know how slow going they can be… And on top of that, a kid’s bedroom with little ones constantly running in and out? Forget about it. But this week I finally tied all the loose ends and wrapped up January’s bedroom refresh!

I think just as different wines pair better with certain foods (which I know nothing about), individual designers have different tastes that pair better with certain rooms, clients, etc.. What can make a designer stand out is even through their ability to be versatile, you can still recognize their work.

One reason that I love to work on my children’s bedrooms is because I get to flex these other styles within me. I love playing with the whimsical elements that a kid’s bedroom evokes. I think that sometimes we see that people can get so worked up over the fact that these children aren’t getting the childhood bedroom that so many of us can relate to. Instagram and Pinterest weren’t a thing, and most moms were not in the realm of curating these perfectly photographable bedrooms for their kids – the pages in the JCPenney catalog just didn’t hit the same way a social media super mom’s page does. While there is nothing wrong with those Hanson or Tweety bird posters we had, there is also nothing wrong with a mom getting a little bit of her say in the styling of her child’s room – I’m all for team mom, we’ve had to fight and earned our right to party…er decorate.

As I took on January’s bedroom refresh, I certainly considered her personality and style and I also built on top of what we had already done in there so far. The room has been painted in phases as my bravery towards color in there has built too. First it was all white walls with ‘Moroccan Clay’ painted trim. Next, I did color blocked walls with the white exposed on top and the Moroccan Clay on bottom. This month, I let that deep rose take over the room and painted all walls and trim to match. Heck, I would have done the ceiling too, but leaving those glow in the dark stars up were a compromise we made.

Next, we did a bit of rearranging with her furniture. During the beginning of virtual learning during the pandemic, I built her a desk for her bedroom. As she has not needed it now, and hopefully never again under those circumstances, I decided to get that extra space back by removing it. We added a third shelf, one that used to be in there, and now she can easily display and play with her Friends Lego sets. Her shelves are a fun spot to display collections (jewels), her favorite books, and a few décor items we both find pretty.

As I moved furniture around I wanted her bed to really pop against that elaborate mural. To incorporate more color and patterns, I drew from her rug the blues and brought that furthermore with a DIY headboard and blue florals in her sheets. And to really set that mural apart, I framed the wall with picture frame moulding.

All of these elements take a little girl’s bedroom to a bit more sophisticated version through simple DIY’s and thoughtful design. If you have a little one at home, we’ve gathered some extra room inspiration for you!

Bring Summer Indoors with Target

It’s been a minute since I shared a blog post. Maybe it’s the sunshine that’s been sticking around, or the new projects that are calling my name, but I am feeling motivated to do and share more these days! As you have seen, content creation is a nonstop job and it has its ups and downs.

The win that I am taking with me this week is that Target wanted to work with me! I mean, it only took me shopping there every week for the past 15 years to make it happen! If you are an avid Target shopper, then you know what I mean when I say it is a scary place to shop. And I mean that in the most loving way. Somehow, I always end up with a basket, a dress, and shampoo that I did not go in there for. This time around, I got to pick out some new items from some of Target’s latest collaboratives and it was all in the fun of sharing with you guys! Dream actualized.

One of my very favorite places to style in my home is my entryway. I have the black, floating table to change up and the bench to style up with pillows and usually some kind of catch-all (bowl, basket, tray). I always have fun arranging the hooks with different knick-knacks and I suppose the obvious use of them comes in handy daily- the constant pile of backpacks, coats, and purses get purposefully hidden from my feed.

Black table : On this table I tend to include some kind of vase or pottery. The reason for this is because even if it is not filled with greenery or flowers, it adds height and statement to the first view when walking into my home. These two pots from Target are the perfect look in any space because of their neutral color and organic aesthetic. I also love styling two together, you know, the more the merrier.

I also typically include a candle on this table because the ambiance it creates is an instant sense of cozy. Which is exactly what I want people to feel when they come into our home. Not to mention a scented candle to add a welcoming aroma. This ceramic candle is the perfect touch of summer with the coconut and sea salt fragrance. I also love the jar because once that candle is melted through you can reuse the pottery as a decorative item!

Bench: The bench is a staple in any entryway large enough to hold seating. It makes it easier for guests and family members to put on their shoes or set heavier items on when entering the home. The addition of pillows just adds that comfort and sign of, “sit here.” This large, textured pillow is speaking summer vibes to me with the color and woven cover. I have paired it with this patterned pillow to add some depth, color, and again that textural interest. Just look at those tassels!

If you have started to think about the upcoming season and are dreaming of summer days – then start by decorating your home for it! You don’t have to wait till June, 21st to start summer in your home. The little additions can emulate the longer days and increasing temperatures.
